5th March 2007 - Information removed from the main GCSRSG on 13 September 2008 On behalf of the Genetic Counsellor Statutory Regulation Steering Group (GCSRSG). Genetic Counsellors are an emerging professional group, related to but separate from existing health professions. In the UK the genetic counselling profession is composed of individuals from nursing, other professional and academic backgrounds. During the 1990s the Association of Genetic Nurses & Counsellors (AGNC) identified the benefits of and need for a national register of genetic counsellors. A voluntary registration process, which is competency based and set at Masters Degree level began in 2002, leading to professional registration. Following its successful introduction, the AGNC committee and Registration Board recognised the importance of moving towards statutory regulation for the Genetic Counsellor profession and formed the GCSRSG to take this forward The advantages of statutory regulation include: - -
Protecting patients As a steering group, we have explored our options for statutory regulation including the NMC who are unable to regulate Genetic Counsellors as a stand alone profession as this is beyond their remit. We have therefore confirmed our intention to work towards applying to the Health Professions Council (HPC). For further information about the Health Professions Council see www.hpc-org.uk The GCSRSG is keen to hear the views of all Genetic Counsellors and other interested parties on the proposed application to the HPC and would welcome contact at the above address. We are aiming to hold a vote regarding professional regulation and the HPC application. Currently anyone with the title ‘Genetic Counsellor’ will be entitled to vote. Anyone who thinks they fit into this category and is not already a member of the professional organisation (the AGNC) should contact the GCSRSG enclosing personal details and a copy of their job description. Provided they are entitled to vote we will send them further information and a ballot paper.

opportunity to debate statutory regulation and
the HPC for all genetic nurse/counsellors (e.g.
presentation by HPC at BSHG this September,
regular updates in the newsletter, creation of a
web page on AGNC website, provision of HPC
leaflets, possible regional road-shows).
Our first meeting with the HPC will take
place in June this year. We will continue to
keep members up to date with our work.
Members are welcome to contact us with any
questions and concerns throughout this
process. For more information about the HPC,
